Causes
1. Bacteria
Bacteria lives naturally in your mouth. When you eat, bacteria feed on the food left in your mouth and leaves a foul-smelling waste product behind.
2. Dry Mouth
When your mouth is not making enough saliva and you constantly feeling dryness in your mouth. Saliva is important to wash out your mouth. Little saliva means that your mouth is not clean enough as it supposed to be. Dry mouth can also be caused by certain medications and oral disease.
3. Gum disease
Gum diseases is caused by plaque- a thin biofilm layer that reside on your tooth surface. Plaque contains bacteria which again causes bad breath.
4. Food
Certain food such as garlic and onion can cause bad breath when you exhale.
5. Smoking and Tobacco
Smoking does not only stain your teeth but it gives rise to gum disease and bad breath.
Ways to improve bad breath
1. Try using an antibacterial mouthwash
2. Brush your teeth and gum twice daily
3. Clean between your teeth with interdental brush or floss at least once a day
4. Use fluoride toothpaste
5. Clean your tooth once a day using tongue scraper or cleaner
6. Keep saliva flowing by eating foods that require chewing such as sugar-free gum
7. Quit smoking
8. Visit dentist regularly to get scaling to improve oral health
9. Keep dentures clean and remove them at night
