Do we need flossing?
It is important to floss once a day to reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease. There are several benefits of using floss, including:
- Removing food particles and plaque from between teeth and along the gumline, where a toothbrush can't easily reach.
- More effectively eliminating bacteria that cause bad breath compared to brushing alone.
- Removing plaque from below the gumline, which can erode tooth enamel and turn into tartar, potentially causing tooth discoloration.
- Reducing the risk of cavities.
- Decreasing the likelihood of gum soreness, puffiness, and unsightly redness.
- Helping prevents gingivitis, which can progress to periodontitis.
When should we floss?
- Floss at least once per day, ideally before bedtime.
- Flossing at night helps remove food particles and plaque accumulated during the day.
- Flossing before brushing dislodges particles and plaque from between teeth and along the gumline.
- Brushing afterward ensures that loosened particles are effectively cleaned away.
What kinds of floss are there?
- Waxed and un-waxed thread (most common types)
- Super floss (most beneficial to those with orthodontic braces, bridges, and wide gaps between teeth)
- Floss picks (convenient for traveling or flossing on the go)
- Air flossers (use air pressure to push out debris between the teeth)
-
Water flosser (use water pressure to flush out debris between the teeth)
